HOUSTON (*1721) after WILSON (*1721), Portrait of Charles Watson-Wentworth, Mezzotint Richard Houston (1721 - 1775 ) after Benjamin Wilson (1721 - 1788 ): The Right Noble Charles Marquis of Rockingham, Earl of Malton Portrait in three-quarter length, 18th century, Mezzotint Technique: Mezzotint on Paper Inscription: At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "The Right Noble Charles Marquis of Rockingham, &c. &c.". At the lower part further inscription: "Printed for Robt. Sayer, Map & Printseller at the Golden Buck near Serjeants Inn Fleet Street, London.". Date: 18th century Description: The Marquess of Rockingham is depicted in three-quarter length, elegantly dressed in an ornate velvet skirt with lace cuffs. With his right hand on his hip, he looks confidently out of the picture to the right, while his left hand rests on a parapet of papers. An open window in the background with stacked books lends the scene a prestigious and intellectual character.
