J. PUNT (1711–1779), A Dilapidated Farmstead with a Round Tower, 1760, Etching Jan Punt (1711–1779): A dilapidated farmstead with a round tower A ruined rural building, used as an illustration for “La Goutte et l’Araignée,” 1760, Etching Technique: Etching on paper Print Quality: An absolutely superb, harmonious print. Inscription: Signed in the printing plate at the lower left: “J. Punt del. et sculps.” At the bottom of the printing plate: “LA GOUTTE ET L'ARAIGNÉE. Fable L. 2e Planche.” Date: 1760 Description: Within a rectangular frame, a dilapidated farmstead is depicted, featuring a round tower, a tall chimney wall, and exposed half-timbering. The thatched roof is badly damaged; beams, doors, and window openings are arranged in tiers extending into the depth of the picture. In the foreground lie stones, plants, and uneven ground, while dense foliage frames the scene on the left. Two small birds enliven the sky. There are no figures; the depiction appears to be a setting in preparation for a narrative. Delicate parallel hatching renders the sky, masonry, and shaded areas, while bolder lines outline the architecture. The contrast between the dilapidated dwelling and the tranquil sky lends the illustration a moralizing, literary atmosphere.
