W. WATTS (*1752) after BARRET (*1767), Lodge in Richmond Park, 1780, Etching William Watts (1752 - 1851 ) after George Barret jun. (around 1767 - 1842 ): Lodge in Richmond Park The Lodge in Richmond Park, residence of Philip Medows Esqr, 1780, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Impression Quality: Quite excellent, harmonious pressure, delicate and clear. Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "G. Barrett R.A. del. / W. Watts sculp.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "The Lodge, in Richmond-Park, the residence of Philip Medows Esqr. / Published as the Act directs, Jan.y 1. 1780, by W. Watts, King's Row, Chelsea.". Date: 1780 Description: Rectangular landscape sheet with a multi-part country house on the bank of a calm body of water. The building lies slightly left of center and is framed by tall trees; a weeping willow lowers its branches to the water's edge. On the right, a curved path leads into the depths, with several horses standing under a tree next to it. Two small figures animate the forecourt of the house. The sky is wide open and differentiated by delicate horizontal hatching and softly modulated clouds. The print works with clear linearity, dense hatching and graduated chiaroscuro modeling. The motif combines architectural portrait, park landscape and representative representation of property.
