Andrew McCallum (British, 1821-1902) Sailboats in the Bay and a Rowboat Taxiing Figures to an Anchored Boat, 1890 oil on panel signed MacCallum and dated (lower right) 30 1/2 x 40 in. (77.5 x 101.6 cm) Property of a California Collector This lot is located in Chicago. Framed: 43 x 52 1/2 x 5 3/4 in. This artwork is in generally poor condition. Significant deposits of surface dirt, dust, and grime; craquelures throughout, with multiple areas of lifting and tenting paint, primarily within the sky; frame abrasions along the left edge; under a very discolored varnish layer. Under UV light: the thick varnish layer prohibits a clear understanding of the inpainting; however, there appears to be small to medium spots of inpainting throughout the sky and water; an area of inpainting in the sails of the central boat; and a larger area in the center left, within the mountainside; the signature appears to have been strengthened.
