Lot Note: Traditionally known as the birthplace of Venus, goddess of love and beauty, Cythera is a Greek Island in the Ionian Sea. The present painting is very much in the 18th century tradition of fête champêtre (pastoral festival) and fête galante (courtship party) paintings which feature elegant figures in landscapes. A variation of this subject was painted by Jean-Antoine Watteau in 1717, now in the collection of the Louvre Museum.
