The classicism that emanates from this painting—through the idealization of the figures and the monumental architecture suggested in the background—is reminiscent of the work of Nicolas Poussin, the Carracci, and Guido Reni. The composition and the drapery reflect an aesthetic based on the pursuit of balance, proportion, and nobility. The artist who created this painting was likely an Italian active in Rome around 1700 or a Frenchman staying in the Eternal City to study the bella maniera.
