DUPLESSIS, Claude. Treatises by Mr. Duplessis, Former Attorney at the Parliament, on the Customary Law of Paris. Paris, Nicolas Gosselin, 1702. folio (39.5 x 25 cm), full brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). 13 ff. 116-53-26-74 pp. - 138-44-72-18-12-16-188-127 pp. Scuffs; damaged corners and lower cap. Fine foxing. Second edition of the works of Claude Duplessis, a lawyer at the Parliament, renowned for his legal writings, notably his treatises on the Coutume de Paris (published successively with notes by Berroyer and Laurière in 1699, 1702, and 1709) and other criminal law topics. The Paris Customary Law was one of the most influential customary laws in France, often serving as a supplementary model or major reference in matters of civil and property law prior to the Napoleonic unification. Duplessis’s commentaries and treatises, supplemented by the critical analyses of Berroyer and Laurière, provided early 18th-century legal practitioners with a detailed exegesis of the rules governing inheritance, feudal relations, and marriage in force in the Paris region. A complete copy of the two volumes bound together in a single volume.
