During the battle Bellerophon engaged the German ships Wiesbaden and Derflinger, scoring hits, and sank a German destroyer. In the course of the battle, Bellerophon fired 62 shells from her 12 inch guns and 14 rounds of 4-inch. She was not hit herself and suffered no casualties. As a senior and experienced Gun Layer, PO Watkinson would have played a key role in supervising the operation of one or more of the Bellerophon’s gun turrets during the battle. His sub-rate was advanced to Gun Layer Class 1 whilst still aboard Bellrophon in April 1918 and he was discharged on completion of his engagement, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve, in December 1918. After leaving the Royal Navy he worked for the well-known Philip & Son shipbuilders at the Noss works in Kingswear, near Dartmouth. He had married Emma Mary Weeks at Totnes in 1904 and lived with her at Totnes until he died on 30 August 1959 aged 80. For his WW1 Service he received the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, but only the BWM has survived. Very Fine (VF) condition.
