François Frédéric Lemot (attributed to) Sleeping Ariadne, France, early 19th century 53 x 70 x 25 cm The sculpture, carved from white statuary marble with a Portoro marble base, depicts Ariadne Asleep, reclining on a couch, her head tilted back and supported by her left hand, and her right arm raised above her head. The figure is draped in a generous, classical-style drapery arranged in dense folds, which partially reveals the torso. The composition is derived from the famous Hellenistic prototype of the Sleeping Ariadne, known through the Roman version preserved in the Vatican Museums and long identified as Cleopatra. This model enjoyed considerable popularity in Italian sculpture produced for European collectors between the 18th and 19th centuries.
