The Smiths: a unique collection of material from a June 1983 Oxford University concert, where the band had been privately booked for 'The Oxford Architectural Students Society' Summer Ball, comprising two original event posters, 60 cm x 45 cm, (one stuck down on card), the original contract between the organiser and Mike Hinc (the band's live event agent, acting for 'All Trade Booking'), a group of ten photographic negatives taken by the organiser, of the band performing onstage on the night (17th June 1983), six of which have been later professionally printed as A3 archival quality print images, also present, together with a USB flash drive and CD, each containing the photographic images, and two music press articles from the same month as the event, (which illustrate the enthusiasm for the band, just as they were breaking through). The contract includes details of the band's fee, £250, payable in cash on the night of the event, and a rider formed of '24 Pils Lagers, 2 bottles red wine, 1 white wine, 6 litres orange juice, cold buffet for 10 people'. They agreed to arrive at 4pm, for a 4.30pm soundcheck and to perform between 11pm and 11.45pm. With the event taking place just a month after the release of their first single, 'Hand in Glove', The Smiths were getting noticed, and therefore more in demand. Mike Hinc had contacted the organisers just before the event to ask if the band could buy themselves out of appearing, and even offered as much as £2,000 to do so. This was declined, as tickets had been sold to an expectant crowd and it was too late to find a replacement. As a result, their appearance went ahead as planned. The accompanying negatives (and photographs) show all four members of the band on stage (Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke), in previously unseen and unpublished images. As part of this sale, the vendor (who took the photographs on the night), will pass on all of his rights to the images, to the buyer.
