THREE 17TH-CENTURY VOLUMES IN 16° AND 24° FORMATS: 1) Nicolò Dolgioni / Zuanne Zittio THE NOTABLE AND WONDERFUL THINGS OF THE CITY OF VENICE, published in Venice MDCLXVI by Gio. Battista Cestari. In 24°. Nineteenth-century rebind in plain cardboard. Sporadic foxing and very sporadic discoloration due to age. This volume is a typical “guide for foreigners” and residents of the Baroque era. The volume offers a detailed description of 17th-century Venice in the form of a dialogue between a Venetian and a stranger. It provides a detailed account of the political, religious, and artistic structure of the Republic of Venice. Pp. (20), 336. 2) Guido Bentivoglio (1577–1644) COLLECTION OF LETTERS WRITTEN BY CARDINAL BENTIVOGLIO. DURING HIS TENURE AS NUNTIUS TO FLANDERS AND FRANCE, ed. Venice MDCLXX, published by Zaccaria Conzatti. In 24°. Nineteenth-century binding in marbled cardboard with gold titles within a leather patch on the spine. Interesting woodcut vignette on p. 10 depicting a knight on horseback with a raised sword, representing a classical motif evoking the imagery of virtue, valor, and protection. The volume is in fairly good condition. 239 pp. 3) André Dacier (1651–1722) LES ŒUVRES D'HORACE, TRANSLATED INTO FRENCH WITH NOTES AND CRITICAL REMARKS BY THE FRENCH PHILOLOGIST ANDRÉ DACIER, ed. Paris: Denys Thierry and Claude Barbin, 1691. In 16°. Volume II only. The work includes a French translation (often with the Latin text in parallel columns) of the Odes, Satires, Epistles, and the *Art of Poetry*. It is rich in extensive historical, geographical, and critical notes written by Dacier, intended to make the texts accessible to a 17th-century audience. The volume bears an ex libris stamped with the motto “TOUT EST ET N’EST RIEN,” belonging to the noble family of the Challant Visconti of Aosta (Inventaire des archives des Challant—Volume II). Beautiful and elegant contemporary full-leather binding with ribbing, titles, and gold lettering on the spine. Engraving on the frontispiece. Elegantly engraved headpieces and tailpieces. Pp. (4), 424. Volumes not collated.
