THREE 18TH-CENTURY WORKS IN FRENCH: 1) Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux (1636–1711). OUVRES DE BOILEAU DESPREAUX, ed. Paris: Pierre Didot the Elder and Firmin Didot (Paris), Year VII (1800). A 2-volume work in 16mo. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled covers. Pages clean and well-preserved. Edges sprinkled. Volumes in excellent condition. This work is among the earliest experiments in stereotype printing promoted by the Didot family, which allowed for a uniform and low-cost printing run of literary classics. Pp. XXIII, 322; 330. 2) François Fénelon, *LES AVENTURES DE TELEMAQUE ET CELLES D’ARISTONOUS PAR FENELON AVEC DES NOTES GEOGRAPHIQUES ET MYTHOLOGIQUES*, ed. Paris: J. Langlume et Peltier, n.d. (approximately 1850). Contemporary half-leather binding with stiff percallina covers and titles and friezes embossed in gold on the spine. Some sporadic foxing, but the volume is in more than fair condition. This is a fine nineteenth-century edition of the work. The volume is enriched with explanatory notes of a geographical and mythological nature to help readers understand the text’s classical references, aided by the plates and engravings outside the text depicting mythological subjects. 332 pp. (2), with six plates outside the text, each engraved with two scenes drawn from the various books.
