Novohispanic School. Guatemala. 18th century. 'Saint Joseph with the Child' An imposing sculpture in carved and polychromed wood with silver accents, such as the staff carried by Saint Joseph and the halos of both figures. It rests on its original carved and gilded wooden base. 80 x 32 x 20 cm. The figures are clothed, so the faces—including the necks—and the extremities of Saint Joseph and the Child are polychromed. In this particular case, the quality of the polychromy in the flesh tones of the porcelain-like faces is particularly outstanding.
