Nicole is the mistress of Michel Delassalle, the tyrannical headmaster of a boarding school, while Christina, frail and suffering from heart problems, is his wife. United by their hatred for the same man, the two women form a pact to murder him. But the inexplicable disappearance of the body soon plunges their criminal enterprise into a world of dread and the supernatural. Adapted from the novel *Celle qui n’était plus* by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac, the film relies on a structure of manipulation and suspense—the outcome of which is best left to be discovered.
