Set of 2 vintage postcards featuring reproductions of famous works of traditional Japanese art from the Edo period. The postcard on the left depicts an actor from the Kabuki theater genre, recognizable by his expressive makeup (kumadori). The title inscribed in the red cartouche indicates that this is an illustration from the famous anthology of the eighteen best Kabuki plays (Kabuki Jūhachiban), depicting here a powerful theatrical pose called Oshimodo (押戻). Kabuki actor by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III). This postcard was in circulation in the early 20th century, as evidenced by the official Japanese 6-sen postage stamp canceled directly on the illustration in the lower right corner. The postcard on the right, *Mother Breastfeeding Her Child in Front of a Mirror* by Kitagawa Utamaro, is a reproduction of one of the most iconic prints by Kitagawa Utamaro, the great master of depictions of female beauty (bijin-ga). It depicts a young mother in a kimono tenderly nursing her baby, while the reflection of the infant’s shaved head appears in the black standing mirror. The entire set.
