This Japanese print is an original illustration from the book *Kottō-shū* (骨董集 — *Collection of Curiosities*), written by the famous Edo-period writer and artist Santō Kyōden (山東京伝). The work was illustrated in collaboration with several artists, including Katsushika Hokusai, and published in the early 19th century (the pencil inscriptions at the bottom indicate the historical date of 1804). The illustration depicts a traditional scene related to the performing arts of ancient Japan. The Puppet (Ningyō): A woman manipulates a small puppet dressed in traditional court attire on a wooden seat, a direct reference to traditional puppet theater (Ningyō Jōruri or Bunraku). On the right, two male figures watch the performance while drinking tea or sake. Their clothing features traditional wave patterns (seigaiha). The texts contain historical explanations written by Kyōden on the evolution of customs, everyday objects, and folk arts during the Edo period.
