38 - An illustration from a printed book depicting two scenes in the Toba-e (鳥羽絵) style, a genre of humorous and caricature-style painting that has greatly influenced modern manga. These drawings depict itinerant street puppeteers, known as Ebisu-mawashi (恵比寿回し) or traditional puppet show performers. Each performer carries a wooden box suspended around their neck or waist, which serves as a miniature stage for animating small glove puppets in front of an audience of children and passersby. The artistic style is typical of the Toba-e genre, characterized by figures with slender, exaggeratedly long limbs, simplified expressive faces with slanted eyes, and a touch of burlesque humor characteristic of the Edo period.
