Its origins can be traced back to Andreas Salicus de Salis, born around 1060, considered the founding ancestor of the dynasty. Over the centuries, the Salis-Samaden family held important political, diplomatic and military positions within the Graubünden Leagues, and maintained close ties with the great courts of Europe. A branch of the powerful House of Salis, the Samaden (or Samaden/Samedan) line distinguished itself particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries through its influence and aristocratic alliances. The family also established itself in France through the marriage of Anne Marie Henriette Sophie de Salis-Samade (1776-1853) to Baron Michel de Triqueti.
