Jean-Baptiste PIGALLE (1714–1785), after *The Child with the Cage* White marble figure on a chiseled and gilded bronze base with rich foliage decoration. Late 18th century. Height: 50 cm Provenance: -Tour and Taxis princely collection -then a private collection in Frankfurt am Main Note. This sculpture depicts the son of Jean Pâris de Montmartel, a wealthy financier and art collector who was also the godfather of the Marquise de Pompadour. Pigalle admired this work so much that he later decided to purchase it to pair it with a second creation: *The Girl with the Bird and the Apple*. Unlike the boy, this girl is not a portrait of a real child. Together, these two statues form a pair celebrating the innocence of childhood. The original marble sculpture of *The Child with the Cage* is housed at the Louvre Museum in Paris (inventory no. RF 654).
