Joan Miró, Die schwarze Sonne, colour lithograph with star signs and fields of colour (1893 Barcelona – 1983 Palma de Mallorca), colour lithograph on paper, mounted on a support sheet, unsigned. In the upper field of the picture a large black disc lies over a grey rectangle, beside it to the right a red circle within a yellow ring; added to these are black star signs, straight lines and an oval hatched in violet. The lower half of the picture is filled by broad, overlapping fields of colour in blue, green and red with white speckles. Age-appropriate good condition, minimal creasing upper left. Image 37 x 27.5 cm (HxW), mount, behind glass, framed, overall size 57 x 46 cm (HxW) Alongside Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró is among the formative artists of the 20th c. Out of the surrealist practice of automatic drawing he developed a pictorial language of his own made up of signs, stars, birds and strong primary colours. From the 1950s onwards he turned increasingly to printmaking, which he expressly valued for its reach. Numerous of his lithographs were published by the Galerie Maeght in Paris, among them issues of the periodical Derrière le Miroir, which Miró furnished with original lithographs for each of his exhibitions; these sheets were issued unsigned and unnumbered.
