Wolfgang Mattheuer, "Erstes Grün", window view with flowerpot and trees, Leipzig School, 1974 (1927 Reichenbach im Vogtland to 2004 Leipzig), colour screenprint/paper, signed "W. Mattheuer" in pencil lower right and dated (19)74, view across a windowsill with a yellow flowerpot on a saucer holding a bare shoot with small green leaves, on the left a grey window handle, below it a radiator grille, behind bare black trees and hills in shades of blue and grey under a sky with dark blue bands of cloud, age-appropriate good condition, paper yellowed, image 67.5x48 cm (HxW), behind glass, framed, overall 84.5x62.5 cm (HxW) Wolfgang Mattheuer, born in Reichenbach im Vogtland in 1927 and died in Leipzig in 2004, painter, printmaker and sculptor, taught graphic art and book art at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig and, with Werner Tübke and Bernhard Heisig, is regarded as a co-founder of the Leipzig School; in 1974, the year this sheet was made, he gave up his professorship and worked freelance from then on, and in 1988 he left the SED. In screenprinting, the stencil process of serigraphy, the ink is pressed with a rubber squeegee through a fine mesh that is blocked by a stencil in the non-printing areas; each screen prints one colour, so that a multicoloured sheet such as "Erstes Grün" is produced in several printing runs. The colour screenprint with the window view of the first shoots belongs to the prints of the Leipzig School and to the art of the GDR.
