Iacob Haid sculps. Aug. Vind.", lower left "Io. Iust. Preißler pinx.", lower centre "Dec. V.", sheet from Jacob Brucker's "Bilder-sal", Augsburg 1746, half-length portrait of the Altdorf professor Christian Gottlieb Schwarz with full-bottomed wig, lace jabot, dark waistcoat and cloak with decorated border laid over the shoulder, one hand before the chest, in rocaille frame with shellwork, below a cartouche with coat of arms and crest, in the arms a warrior with lance, inscription cartouche with the name "CHRISTIAN GOTTLIB SCHWARZIUS" and Latin inscription, condition commensurate with age, foxing, edge defects, slightly rubbed, verso remnant of adhesive tape at the upper edge, image 31.5x20 cm (HxW), overall 36x23.5 cm (HxW) Johann Jacob Haid was a painter, mezzotint engraver and print publisher in Augsburg and created around 300 portraits in mezzotint, after his own designs and after paintings by other masters. He is also known for his coloured botanical engravings for Johann Wilhelm Weinmann's "Phytanthoza Iconographia"; after his death his son Johann Elias Haid continued the publishing house. The collected work of the Augsburg scholar Jacob Brucker, with the full title "Bilder-sal heutiges Tages lebender, und durch Gelahrtheit berühmter Schrifft-Steller", brought together portraits of scholars and appeared in decades of ten portraits each; "Dec. V." denotes the fifth decade. The sitter is the classical philologist Christian Gottlieb Schwarz (1675 Leisnig – 1751 Altdorf near Nuremberg), who from 1709 taught rhetoric and poetry, later also moral philosophy and history at the University of Altdorf. He was chief librarian of the university, imperial count palatine, member of the Berlin Academy and president of the Pegnesischer Blumenorden. The model was painted by the Nuremberg artist Johann Justin Preisler (1698–1771), son and pupil of Johann Daniel Preisler and from 1742 director of the Nuremberg Academy.
