Probably Caithness, glass vase, decor probably "Autumn Leaves", etched autumn leaves, violet glass Violet glass, glass vase, probably Caithness Glass, Scotland, decor probably "Autumn Leaves" after Denis Mann, incised underneath "A-Leaves", below it a further indistinct inscription, slender cylindrical form, thick-walled rounded base with deep kick, the wall etched with a rising, branching twig and falling autumn leaves, good condition, H. 23.5 cm. Caithness Glass was founded in 1961 by Robin Sinclair in Wick in the far north of Scotland; in 1962 the paperweight artist Paul Ysart joined as instructor, and from 1969 paperweights became the best-known product of the works. The designers included Domhnall O'Broin, Colin Terris and Denis Mann, who in 1970 created the vase "Autumn Leaves" with leaf decor for the Woodland series; the vases of this series bear the engraver's signature on the base. After takeovers by Drambuie (1991), Royal Doulton (1996) and Dartington Crystal (2006), the brand continues to this day. Besides the paperweights, the Woodland vases with their colour gradients in the glass are among the works' best-known products.
