Poschinger vase with applied violet threads, iridescent art glass, wavy rim Glass with iridescent surface and applied violet glass threads. Vase by Poschinger, unmarked. Waisted body with rounded shoulder, short drawn-in neck and widely flared, wavy rim, whitish matt glass ground, the threads encircling in irregular loops, one around the base of the neck, with violet dots. Base with ground pontil mark. In good condition commensurate with age, without chips. H. 25.5 cm. 360-degree photo available on our website. Poschinger is a family of glassmakers based in the Bavarian Forest since the 16th century: Joachim Poschinger acquired the Zadlershütte near Zwieselau in 1568, his son Paulus the Frauenau glassworks estate in 1605, which is still run by the family today. Other branches of the family operated glassworks in Oberzwieselau and Buchenau. Thread overlay, also called fused thread decoration, is a decoration in which coloured glass threads are fused onto the glass body; it is found on glass vases and bowls from the Poschinger glassworks. The rainbow-coloured sheen of iridescent art glass, also called lustre glass, is created when the hot glass is sprayed with solutions of tin chloride or metal salts and a wafer-thin layer of tin oxide forms on the surface; the technique is known among others from Tiffany and Loetz.
