The glassworks Adolf near Winterberg in Bohemia was founded in 1816 by Josef Meyr and named after Johann Adolf II, Prince of Schwarzenberg. After the death of Meyr's son Johann in 1841, Johann's nephews Wilhelm Kralik and Josef Taschek continued the business under the name Meyr's Neffen, and from 1862 Kralik alone as Meyr's Neffe. In the 1870s the works employed around 730 workers, produced hollow and sheet glass and carried out commissions for trading houses such as J. & L.
