Cylindrical glass tankard with pewter lid and foot rim, etched decor with motto "Wo sol ich nun hin" Clear glass and pewter, glass tankard with pewter lid, cylindrical tankard (Walzenkrug), glass with rough pontil mark underneath, cylindrical wall, curved glass handle with scrolled lower end, domed pewter lid with gadrooned rim, beaded band and flat centre, hinge with urn-shaped ribbed thumb piece with beaded edge, pewter sleeve at the handle join, broad flat pewter foot rim, pewter lid with three marks inside (wheel mark with six spokes and two figure marks), wall with etched decor: wavy band all round below the rim, motto "Wo sol ich nun hin", below it a flowering branch with fern frond and scrollwork, a leaping roe deer at the side, condition commensurate with age, pewter mount at the foot bent and with losses, lid mount bent, wall and foot with scratches, H. 24 cm. The Walzenkrug is the cylindrical form of the Humpen, a drinking vessel with handle, hinged lid and foot ring that arose in the German-speaking world in the 16th century and was made mostly of glass or stoneware. The pewter lid was usually fitted by the pewterer at the place of sale; drinking mottoes, coats of arms and personal inscriptions were the usual decoration of such beer tankards, and as a lidded beer tankard the Walzenkrug was widespread in Saxony in the 18th and 19th centuries, as shown by a piece from Kamenz around 1800 with pastoral scene and verse. Pewterers usually marked their work with town mark, master's mark and quality mark; the guild regulations for this go back to the 14th century. The rough pontil mark on the base, the attachment point of the pontil rod when blowing the tankard, has been left unworked here.
