Kaeser & Uhlmann, octagonal bowl, 835 silver, hammered decoration, probably Art Deco, sweetmeat dish 835 silver, bowl, Kaeser & Uhlmann, Schwäbisch Gmünd, hallmarked on the underside with "8775" (probably model number), the maker's mark (ligated monogram in a circle), "835" and crescent and crown, octagonal faceted wall with rim drawn in between the corners and pulled-out corners, hammered decoration inside, round plain well, probably Art Deco, 1920s/1930s. Good condition. D. 14 cm, H. 3 cm, weight 70 g. The silverware factory Kaeser & Uhlmann was founded in 1920 by Julius Kaeser and Alfred Uhlmann in Schwäbisch Gmünd, the centre of the southern German silverware industry, and produced silver and nickel silver wares with an idiosyncratic, modern formal language. As the only Jewish silverware manufacturer in the town, the firm existed only until 1935: Alfred Uhlmann emigrated to Palestine in 1934, and Julius Kaeser left Germany in 1935 after the factory had passed to the silverware factory Wilhelm Binder. Hammered decoration, also called martelé, and faceted, geometric forms characterise German Art Deco silver around 1930. Small silver bowls of this kind are also referred to as sweetmeat dishes or biscuit bowls.
