Shell-shaped serving dish, 800 silver, mythical creature handle, plus sifter spoon, Daniel & Arter 1) 800 silver, serving dish in the form of a shell, hallmarked on the rim crescent and crown, "800" and "2" as well as maker's mark (not identified), body and hinged lid with shell ribbing, the lid with rope rim and scrolled volute finial, in the lid rim a cut-out for the spoon handle, at one end a figural handle in the form of a winged mythical creature with long neck above a C-shaped bracket, on curved feet, hinged, good condition, 19x9 cm (LxH), weight 210 g. 2) Silver-plated, sugar sifter spoon, also sifting spoon, marked on the back of the stem "D&A" in a shield beside marks in the style of English hallmarks ("B", crown and globe), Daniel & Arter, Birmingham, shell-shaped ribbed, pierced bowl, short stem widening in a drop shape with flower and leaf decoration in relief, good condition, L. 12 cm, weight 34 g. Crescent and crown are the national mark for German silverware under the Act on the Standard of Gold and Silver Wares of 16 July 1884, which came into force on 1 January 1888; the figure 800 gives the standard in thousandths, which the act prescribed as the minimum standard for silver. Together with the rocaille, the shellwork of the Rococo, the shell belongs to the repertoire of the silversmiths, which the workshops of Historicism took up again in the 2nd half of the 19th century, for example in Hanau, with figural handles and sculptural mythical creatures; a lidded dish in shell form, also called a shell box, served on the table as a sugar bowl or confectionery dish. The sifting spoon with pierced bowl is the classic sifter for icing sugar. It comes from the Birmingham factory Daniel & Arter, which made cutlery of nickel silver and silver-plated metal at the Globe Nevada Silver Works and sold it under trade names such as "Nevada Silver" or "Bengal Silver"; the globe was its company emblem, and the series of marks of letter, crown and globe follows the scheme of English hallmarks.
