Table lamp, Bauhaus-style desk lamp, opal glass shade, dish-shaped base and band arm, 1930s Round dish-shaped metal base and band-shaped, curved rising metal arm, lacquered beige, white push-button switch on the base. Flattened hemispherical shade of opal glass, beige outside, white inside, with metal cover cap. Function tested. Condition commensurate with age, glass shade with two air bubble inclusions, base and arm rubbed, cable probably renewed. H. 44 cm. At the Bauhaus, lamps were created in the metal workshop, whose head for a time, Marianne Brandt (1893-1983), organized the collaboration with the Leipzig manufacturer Körting & Mathiesen, founded in 1889 and known as Kandem for short. From 1928 until the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933, the school supplied the company with designs for industrial series production, and within a few years Kandem sold more than 50,000 Bauhaus lamps. Brandt's plain bedside lamp of lacquered metal went into series production in 1928 and was made until 1946; together with Hin Bredendieck she designed the desk lamp No. 679. Opal glass, also called milk glass, is one of the light-diffusing opacified glasses and is used for lighting purposes because of its strong opacity.
