The premiere took place on 30 September 1791 in Schikaneder's Freihaustheater auf der Wieden in Vienna. At the centre of the plot are Prince Tamino, who is to free Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, from the power of Sarastro, and the bird catcher Papageno, who catches birds for the Queen of the Night.
