Martin Wirth, "Die Feuersteinfelder von Neu-Mukran (Insel Rügen)", Baltic Sea, nature reserve, 2013 (1939 – 2017 Ilsenburg), fineliner and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 2013 lower left, signed, dated and titled verso "Die Feuersteinfelder von Neu-Mukran (Insel Rügen)", wide grey expanse of stones with brushwood and gnarled shrubs, trees to the left and right, grasses in the foreground left, grey overcast sky, good condition, somewhat stained, image 21x29 cm (HxW), overall 21x29.5 cm (HxW) The flint fields lie between Mukran and Prora in the northern part of the Schmale Heide on Rügen and have been under nature protection since 1935. Across some 40 hectares run 14 open ridges of flint, each about 25 m wide and one metre high. The stones come from the chalk cliff of the Jasmund peninsula and were deposited here 3,500 to 4,000 years ago by a series of storm surges. The stone sea is surrounded by pine forest, while juniper grows above all on the ridges themselves. Martin Wirth from Darlingerode (today part of Ilsenburg) was still drawing the island in 2013, four years before his death.
