Wilfried Thierbach, alpine landscape with church, onion dome by a mountain path, dated 2001 Watercolour/paper, signed lower right, inscribed on the backboard "Stolberg/Harz" and dated 2001, alpine landscape with church, white church with onion dome and red roof on a hill, beside it a brown outbuilding, a winding field path with ruts leads up to it, on the left a wooded slope and tall conifers, on the right a deciduous tree with yellow-green foliage and a wooden fence, in the background mountain peaks in the haze, good condition, image 28x38.5 cm (HxW), passe-partout, glazed, framed, overall 46x55 cm (HxW) In the German-speaking world onion domes are widespread above all in southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria and South Tyrol and became the typical formal element of the southern German Baroque. The onion dome is traditionally covered with several layers of hammered copper sheet. With the plein-air painting of the 19th century came a broad rediscovery of painting with water-soluble colours; watercolour was thus also taken up again for landscapes painted outdoors such as this alpine landscape.
