Martin Wirth, St. Paul im Gailtal, Carinthia, village with church and fields before mountains, 1990 (1939 – 2017 Ilsenburg), watercolour over pencil on card, signed and dated (19)90 lower right, titled verso "St. Paul (Kärnten) im Gailtal" and inscribed with the artist's name, view across meadows and fields to the village with church and pointed spire, to the left a large house with balconies, in front parasols and tables, to the right houses with wooden balconies and window boxes, cars on the road, a tractor in the field, behind coniferous forest and a blue-green mountain ridge under a cloudy sky, condition commensurate with age, yellowed, image 36x48 cm (HxW) St. Paul an der Gail, in Slovene Šenpavel na Zilji, is a village in the municipality of Sankt Stefan im Gailtal in the Carinthian district of Hermagor. The municipality lies on both sides of the Gail in the Lower Gailtal, bordered by the main ridge of the Carnic Alps to the south and the Gailtal Alps to the north, and is bilingual to this day. The parish church was first documented in 1392, reconsecrated in 1498 after its destruction by the Turks in 1478, and is a late Gothic building whose tower is crowned by a four-sided pyramidal spire. The customs of the valley include the Kufenstechen and the Gailtal traditional costume. Martin Wirth, who originally came from the Goldene Aue, captured the Gailtal village in 1990.
