Blockus" and dated "3 1967", abstracted cathedral architecture of staggered round arches, columns with capitals and clustered piers in yellow, orange, green and black, in the centre between the arches a raised dark hand, good condition commensurate with age, plywood cracked in places, especially upper left, blistering in the paint, image 60x50 cm (HxW), framed, frame chipped, frame width 7 cm Since Lyonel Feininger's Cubist woodcut "Cathedral" of 1919, the title page of Walter Gropius's Bauhaus manifesto, the cathedral has been a symbol of modernism: there the Gothic cathedral stood for the total work of art and the unity of the arts. The breaking down of architecture into staggered arches and luminous areas of colour carries this Expressionist tradition into the painting of the 1960s. As an architectural composition, the cathedral picture is a church picture of Expressionist painting.
