Autumnal Upland Landscape with Spruces and a View into the Valley Oil on hardboard, scratched signature lower right, not identified, from a wooded slope the view opens across a valley, the foreground filled with dense dry scrub and grasses in ochre, olive and violet, among them several dark spruces, at the left a closed stand of trees, in the distance, the view extends over a wide, hilly landscape under a pale blue cloudy sky, the colour of the vegetation applied throughout with the palette knife, the areas set side by side in broad angular bands, good condition commensurate with age, image 30x60 cm (HxW), framed, frame rubbed, frame width 5 cm Continuous palette-knife painting was widespread in the landscape painting of the 1960s and 1970s because it dispenses with detailed drawing and creates the pictorial effect through mass of colour and edge alone. The elongated panorama format reinforces this character and was particularly sought after at the time as a picture to hang above a seating group.
