Philipp, Standing Female Nude in Greenery with White Cloth, Nude Painting, framed, 20th Century Oil on canvas, signed lower right, 20th century, standing female nude in frontal view, long dark brown hair, a white cloth over the head and falling over one shoulder, another knotted around the hips, arms hanging down, before dense green foliage with sky blue and white and red blossoms on the ground, good condition, image 40x30 cm (HxW), framed in a black-painted frame with cavetto and gold-coloured mouldings, frame chipped, frame width 10.5 cm The nude in the open air has been a leitmotif of modern painting since Renoir's "The Large Bathers" (1884 to 1887), which the painter regarded as his principal work, and Cézanne's series of bathing nudes in nature, culminating in the "Large Bathers" (1898 to 1905) in Philadelphia. The female nude remained a principal subject of painting in the 20th century, from Expressionism through Cubism to Pop Art; as a nude in the open air in the tradition of the bathers, this small cabinet picture is an example of that nude painting.
