Willy Habl, Wide Landscape with Blue Ridge, North German Landscape, dated 1959 (1888 Egeln to 1964 Hamburg), watercolour over pencil underdrawing on board, signed and dated at lower right Habl 59. A wide view across staggered fields in ochre and green, crossed by narrow paths and hedges; a row of trees in the foreground, groups of bushes in the middle ground, behind them a deep blue ridge. The areas of colour laid in broadly and wet in wet. Good condition commensurate with age, browned and light-stained, image 43x58 cm (HxW), overall 43.5x59 cm (HxW). Willy Habl received his first instruction in drawing at the school of applied arts in Kassel, served an apprenticeship as a lithographer in Hamburg from 1904 to 1908 and studied at the same time at the school of applied arts there under Friedrich Adler and Carl Otto Czeschka. After study journeys to Upper Italy, Hungary and the Balkans and a severe wound in 1915 he taught at the Hamburg Landeskunstschule from 1925 to 1931 and worked independently thereafter. His Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein landscapes are decisively marked by German and French Impressionism. Habl was a member of the Hamburgische Künstlerschaft, of the Kunstverein in Hamburg and of the Altona artists' association; works are held in the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Altonaer Museum. A sheet for collectors of North German landscape painting.
