Harz painter, Harz view, wide low mountain valley with hiking path leading downhill Oil on canvas, signed lower right (not deciphered), wide view from the edge of the forest into the low mountain landscape with wooded hills and a river in the valley, a hiking path leads downhill along trees and fences, on the left a birch, boulders by the wayside, on the right tall conifers, condition commensurate with age, craquelure, especially in the centre around a pressure mark, image 50.5x70.5 cm (HxW), framed, frame width 6 cm Harz painters is the term for the painters who captured the landscape and architecture of the Harz; academies and art schools sent their students to the mountains specifically. Recurring motifs of this landscape painting include dark spruces, foxgloves by the wayside, rock formations and wide meadows with paths. The Harzmuseum Wernigerode owns around 400 oil paintings from two centuries. The name of the low mountain range probably goes back to the Middle High German "hart" for a rugged mountain country.
