Hero Hette Ros, landscape with farmstead and sandy track, large oil painting, Netherlands (1872 – 1964), oil on canvas, signed "H H Ros" lower right. A wide summer landscape in horizontal format: from the lower left a pale sandy track leads in shallow bends into the depth of the picture, lined by tall deciduous trees, some already bare. At the left a low farmstead stands in the shade of the group of trees, at the right the view opens across flat pasture with single rows of trees towards the horizon. On the track a waggon with a team and staffage figures, in the foreground lies a felled trunk, beside it birds peck at the edge of the track. Above it a moving cloudy sky in grey, white and blue. Age-appropriate condition, edges of the canvas with holes, varnish yellowed, partial craquelure. Image 85 x 151 cm (HxW), framed, frame slightly bumped, frame width 10 cm Hero Hette Ros worked in the Netherlands; landscapes from his hand are documented in the trade, among them a view from the surroundings of Alphen aan den Rijn. Dutch landscape painting of the late 19th and early 20th c. followed on from the Hague School, which raised the flat land, the high cloudy sky and the muted, damp light of the coastal provinces to the actual subject of the picture. The low horizon and the sandy track leading into the depth belong to the fixed stock of formulae of this painting, which was produced for the middle-class living room well into the 20th c.
