Christ carrying the Cross in the Nazarene manner, ornate frame Oil on canvas, unsigned. Christ carrying the Cross with numerous figures: Christ with the crown of thorns and a golden-yellow disc halo strides barefoot to the left, the cross over his right shoulder, in a white undergarment and a brilliant red mantle. To the right two tormentors, one with a red turban, the other with hammer and nails, Saint John in a red mantle, the mourning Virgin with a halo in a blue mantle and a veiled companion; in the foreground a woman in an ochre-yellow garment kneels with her arms raised in supplication. Background with the city wall and the architecture of Jerusalem. Smooth, linear handling with clear local colours and idealised physiognomies. Condition commensurate with age, losses to the paint layer, retouching, craquelure. Image 50.5 x 37.5 cm (h x w), gilt ornate frame with an acanthus frieze, rubbed and with knocks, frame width 8 cm. Composition and handling follow the religious painting of the Nazarenes; pictures of this type were produced in large numbers in the 19th century as Stations of the Cross after printed models.
