Genre painter, farmhouse parlour with drinkers, oil painting in oval format with wide frame Oil/canvas, signed lower right. Interior scene in oval format: in a parlour several men in colourful caps sit around an improvised table, one of them raising a glass; at the left stands a woman with a white headscarf, on the floor jugs, pots and pecking hens, on the rear wall implements and lanterns. The painting applied impasto and sketchily in pale ochre, white, blue and red. Age-appropriate good condition, overpainting. Image 50 x 60 cm (HxW), framed, frame slightly bumped, frame width 14.5 cm. The tavern and farmhouse parlour scene goes back to Dutch and Flemish genre painting of the 17th century as shaped by Adriaen van Ostade, David Teniers the Younger and their followers. In the 19th century the subject saw a broad revival in Munich, Dusseldorf and Vienna: subdued interior light, densely arranged groups of figures and lovingly spread out household implements belonged to the standard repertoire. The oval image within a rectangular support is a presentation form widespread in Historicism, which makes the scene appear as if seen through a window.
