Indian painting in the Mughal manner, palace scene with numerous figures, probably 20th c. Tempera on linen, unsigned, probably 20th century. Courtly scene with numerous figures in the manner of Indian Mughal painting: at the right an enthroned prince with a turban, an aigrette and a pearl necklace beneath a canopy with a pink roof, before him six courtiers and servants with turbans, among them a fan bearer and a man presenting a written tablet. Background with palace architecture, slender columns, wall panels and balustrades, muted palette in ochre, pale green, light blue and pink. Surrounding border with golden floral and spiral scrollwork on a black ground. Good condition commensurate with age, partly slightly creased, rubbed. Image 49 x 36 cm (h x w), framed behind glass, frame width 3 cm. Works of this kind were produced as workshop paintings after models of Mughal painting, with audience scenes (durbar) as a favoured subject; the profile heads, the flat outlined painting and the scrollwork border follow the historical models.
