Two floating angels, putti with gilt-coloured wings, painted wood, Baroque style, 20th century Wood, polychrome painted, two floating angel figures (putti) as pendants, with gold-coloured painted wings and loincloths, both with raised arms and bent legs, one angel with brown, the other with dark blond hair, flesh tones cream white with pink cheeks, each with a metal eyelet on the back for hanging, first half 20th century, Baroque style, age-appropriate condition, slightly chipped and rubbed, slightly soiled, one angel with missing index finger and crack in the chest, H. 40 cm The putto, the mostly naked winged child figure, goes back to the antique Eros and in the Baroque became a fixed ornament of altars, organs and balustrades, especially in Venice and southern Germany; as floating angels the pair of putti hangs freely in space, as provided for by the hangers on the backs of the two angel figures. Painted wooden figures received a multi-layered chalk ground from the polychromer, a profession of its own alongside the woodcarver; in water gilding the gold leaf lies on red or ochre bole and is burnished with agate. The pair was made in the Baroque style in the first half of the 20th century and belongs, as Baroque angels, to sacred wood sculpture.
