The brewery in Leipzig-Reudnitz, founded in 1862, was taken over by Carl Adolf Riebeck in 1871 and under his management rose to become the most important brewery in Saxony and the fourth largest in the German Reich. In 1887 the company, trading as Riebeck & Co., was converted into a joint-stock company, and in 1937/38 it was named Riebeck-Brauerei AG; for the anniversary in 1937 the commemorative publication "75 Jahre das gute Riebeck-Bier 1862-1937" appeared. With the branches in Altenburg, Erfurt and Gera, the group reached an annual output of 880,000 hectolitres of beer. After expropriation in 1946 the business continued as VEB Riebeck-Brauerei. Around 1920 the brewery also advertised with the slogan "Das gute Riebeck-Bier" on large enamel signs with a hussar and beer mug in front of his white horse; the enamelled beer cellar thermometer belongs as an advertising thermometer to the same brewery advertising and is collected today like the advertising signs.
