Indian painting is the historical technical term for stylised East Asian flower patterns; in the 18th c. they were called Indian flowers, in distinction from the German flowers, and were current at Meissen from 1720 in the early Hoeroldt period. The dragon pattern follows Japanese models in the Kakiemon style and was made exclusively for the Saxon court until 1918, which is why it is also known in the trade as the Court Dragon. The impressed number denotes the form: 54800 stands for the reticulated plate of about 15 cm diameter in the Neuer Ausschnitt form; the manufactory has issued five-figure form numbers since 1973. Three colourways side by side give a cross-section through the East Asian inspired Meissen patterns.
