Meissen cup and saucer, acanthus leaf relief with blue shading and gilding, circa 1815–1860 Porcelain, blue accented, gilt, glazed, cup with matching saucer by the Porzellanmanufaktur Meissen, circa 1815–1860, relief acanthus leaf decoration, shaped rim, both pieces with blue shading between the leaves and gilding, each with the blue crossed swords mark on the base, condition commensurate with age, gilding heavily rubbed, firing and glaze flaws, handle chipped, cup H. 7 cm. 360-degree photo available on our website. The Meissen porcelain manufactory was founded in 1710 by Augustus the Strong as the first porcelain manufactory in Europe. After underglaze blue painting had been achieved in 1720, the manufactory marked its products with two crossed swords, which on the suggestion of the manufactory inspector Johann Melchior Steinbrück were taken from the coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony. By 1731 the crossed swords mark had become established, and on 20 May 1875 the manufactory had its marks registered under the new trademark protection act. Since 1865 the manufactory has worked in the Triebisch valley in Meissen.
