The Meissen porcelain manufactory was founded in 1710 by Augustus the Strong as the first porcelain manufactory in Europe. After underglaze blue painting had been achieved in 1720, the manufactory marked its products with two crossed swords, which on the suggestion of the manufactory inspector Johann Melchior Steinbrück were taken from the coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony. By 1731 the crossed swords mark had become established, and on 20 May 1875 the manufactory had its marks registered under the new trademark protection act.
