Lbf. Fritz Prechel VdSt z. fr. Erg. Gryps S. 1900 S.”, signed “Arnold Fuberg”, small stress crack above the lower handle attachment, well preserved commensurate with age, D. 9 cm, H. 19 cm The first Verein Deutscher Studenten was formed in 1880 in Berlin; in 1881 associations followed in Halle, Leipzig, Breslau, Greifswald and Kiel. On 6 August 1881, at the first Kyffhäuser festival, attended by some 800 students under the leadership of Diederich Hahn and Friedrich Naumann, the associations joined to form the Kyffhäuserverband, today's Verband der Vereine Deutscher Studenten (VVDSt). In 1881 the imperial colours black-white-red were chosen as the association colours; traditionally they are not worn on ribbon and cap but mostly as a Zipfel. The association's motto referring to Kaiser and Reich was replaced after the re-establishment in 1951 by “Mit Gott für Volk und Vaterland”. The local associations are called “Verein Deutscher Studenten” (VDSt), the umbrella association “Verband der Vereine Deutscher Studenten” (VVDSt). The associations are non-fencing and follow the Lebensbund principle; the Leibverhältnis links an older Bursch as mentor with his Leibfuchs; in the dedication “s/l. Lbf.” stands for “seinem lieben Leibfuchs” (to his dear Leibfuchs), “z. fr. Erg.” for “zur freundlichen Erinnerung” (in friendly remembrance).
