Gold coin 10 Mark 1898 A, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse, German Empire, Imperial gold coin 900 gold, gold coin 10 Mark, German Empire, Grand Duchy of Hesse, 1898, Berlin mint, Jaeger 224, obverse head of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig facing left, legend "ERNST LUDWIG GROSHERZOG VON HESSEN", below mint mark "A", reverse crowned imperial eagle with breast shield, legend "DEUTSCHES REICH 1898" and denomination "10 MARK", beaded circle, condition very fine, D. 19 mm, W. 4 g Ernst Ludwig (1868–1937) reigned from 1892 as Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine; as a grandson of Queen Victoria he was a cousin of Emperor Wilhelm II. By founding the Mathildenhöhe artists' colony in 1899 he made Darmstadt a centre of Art Nouveau; in the November Revolution of 1918 he lost his office and title. The ten-mark piece with his portrait was struck only in 1896 and 1898, with a mintage of 75,000 for the 1898 issue. Because the Darmstadt mint had already closed in 1882, the Hessian imperial gold coin was struck in Berlin, recognisable by the mint mark A. The gold coins of the German Empire are made of 900 gold; a ten-mark piece contains 3.58 g of fine gold.
