L. 16 to 20 cm Before the introduction of cartridge ammunition every shooter carried his powder in a container with a measuring cut-off; cattle horn was the preferred material for this because it is light, waterproof and spark-proof. Alongside the large powder horn a smaller flask for the fine-grained priming powder was often part of the equipment. From the second quarter of the 19th century pressed and embossed metal flasks joined the horns; the pear shape with relief decoration and spring-loaded measuring top is the most common version and was produced in series both in Sheffield and on the Continent.
